About Nora Cietek

I come from a lower-middle-class family with ten children in upstate NY. My father was the custodian at a school for children with developmental disabilities, and my mother was a school bus driver. I began my career as a teaching assistant in that same school and then became the first person in my family to get a college degree.

Nora Cietek age 23I embarked upon a 30-year career with the Schenectady NY Public School System. I served as an ESE Teacher, an Assistant Principal, Principal, and the Assistant Director of Special Education for the school system. During that time, I got my master’s degree in Educational Psychology and raised three children; a son who works as a financial planner for a large investment banking firm, and twin daughters, one of whom is an Attorney living in St. Pete and the other a Chemical Engineer working in Indiana for a large multi-national company.

Three years ago, my husband of 36 years, Scott, and I moved to a beautiful resort community in South Venice. Like many, our goal was to enjoy the fantastic weather, the award-winning beaches, the natural beauty, and the vibrance of Sarasota County, SW Florida’s cultural hub.

Scott got a job managing the Commercial Division of one of our area’s largest real estate firms. I began to settle into my new environment by tutoring and mentoring a young woman from Vietnam, becoming involved with sea turtle conservation efforts on Manasota Key, learning to play golf, training our new dog, a labradoodle named Korbel, and taking sailing lessons. But I quickly came to realize that I was not ready for retirement. I miss my life’s work, the fulfilling work of making sure that other children have the same opportunity that I had to live the American dream.

I love children. I am, above all else, an educator, and I still have a great deal of time, talent, and energy to give to the students in my new community. I can have the most significant impact as a Sarasota County School Board member.

For me, it’s all about our children and the teachers and staff that work tirelessly every day to make sure that those children have access to all the resources that they need to strive to be the best they can be. I’d appreciate your support for election to the Sarasota County School Board.
